Examination Scheduling Software

Exam is an automated examination timetabling system combining state-of-the-art timetabling technology with a fully featured user interface and full support.

Exam scheduling is a time consuming and difficult task. Creating the best solution for students while satisfying a myriad of conflicting issues is like tackling a multi-dimensional jigsaw puzzle: often engaging but usually mind numbingly difficult.

Exam allows you to amalgamate the required data efficiently by seamlessly integrating with your current IT environment. It provides the tools to intuitively create constraints which allow tailored solutions to be trialed and evaluated. Critical issues such as efficient room usage, invigilator assignment and alternative arrangements for students can be modelled, with scenarios being made immediately available. Once the required constraints are established, the strength of these can be varied from ‘definitely must happen’ to ‘it would be nice if this was the case.’ The most obvious example is that students cannot sit two exams at once but it would be very desirable, although not absolutely necessary, to avoid having to sit two exams in one day. The important principal is that you decide what is important for your students.

Exam offers a huge range of advantages for the academic user:

  • Dramatic time savings: Exam offloads the time intensive task of manually scheduling examinations and checking conflicts with other exams.
  • Efficient modeling and utilisation of resources: Exam can work with very limited time and room resources and still produce high quality student centred timetables.
  • High quality student timetables: As well as obeying the constraints specified by the user on the timetable Exam will also try to reduce the pressure on students by maintaining study time between examinations.

As well as the fast generation of high quality timetables, Exam features an intuitive user interface that allows manual adjustments to be made to the timetable at any time.

Exam Features

Efficient generation of good quality timetables: Easy to use interface and support for importing data through ODBC (Open DataBase Connectivity) technology to provide integration with existing information systems. All common examination timetabling constraints such as:

  • Splitting exams over two or more suitable rooms
  • Exam relationships. (e.g. exam A precedes exam B etc.)
  • Minimisation of periods of intense student load.

High element of user control: Exams can be limited to certain periods and/or certain rooms and manually scheduled before the automated process. Where necessary easy manual adjustment of the produced timetable can take place. Comprehensive user support: Initial support installing the system, including training, long term technical support and frequent software updates.

Exam is currently used by a number of academic organisations in the UK, France, Portugal, Malaysia, Australia and China.
